Who is the current Chair of the Buncombe Board of Commissioners?
Brownie Newman. In October, Brownie announced that he will not seek re-election. Brownie was first elected to the Commission in 2012. Brownie then ran and won a campaign to become Chair in 2016. Brownie was re-elected as Chair in 2020.
When was Amanda first elected to the County Commission?
Amanda announced her candidacy for a seat on County Commission in 2017, a seat that was being held by an incumbent Democratic Commissioner, soon after learning that the County Manager (Wanda Greene) was being investigated for fraud, theft, and self-dealing. Amanda ran on a platform of restoring trust and accountability. Amanda won the primary and also the general election in 2018. That was Amanda’s first political campaign. Amanda ran and won re-election to the County Commission in 2022 in a new district (the legislature moved the district lines).
Will there be a primary in this race?
There was no primary. There will be a General Election between Amanda Edwards and a candidate who petitioned to get on the ballot.
Would Amanda be the first woman to serve as Chair of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners?
Yes! So far as we can tell, having consulted with local historians, Amanda Edwards would be the first woman to be elected as Chair in the history of Buncombe County. It’s about time, don’t you think?
